Stone Ruination IPA

Stone Ruination IPA
American Double IPA
7.70% ABV

Greg Score: 90/100

Greg says: Had this on tap. This is one of my favorite IPA's. I buy this for home consumption from time to time. Pours an orangish color. Some citrus and pine smells for the nose. Good hoppy flavor with some slight notes of citrus. Very good beer. Highly recommended if you like IPAs.

Terrapin Pumpkin Fest

Terrapin Pumpkin Fest
Pumpkin Ale
6.10% ABV
Greg Score: 88/100
JT Score: 93/100

Greg says: Now THIS is a good pumpkin ale. Had it on tap. Lots of spice, and pumpkin from the nose and the taste. Malt notes up front followed by a great pumpkin flavor and spices. It was also nice and crisp too. It was so easy to drink and was actually quite refreshing. One of my favorite seasonals for sure. Highly recommended if you enjoy pumpkin.

JT says: I LOVE PUMPKIN. I have enjoyed this on tap and out of a 22 oz bomber. Props to Mellow Mushroom Decatur for having this available right now for only $2.50/ 20oz pour. Flavor and aroma go hand in hand with an up front pumpkin and nutmeg essence. Smooth on the palate that is akin to drinking pumpkin pie. I only wish I would have had this during Thanksgiving dinner. No hoppiness or bitterness here.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale
Pumpkin Ale
7.00% ABV

Greg Score: 80/100

Greg says: Had it on tap. Lot's of spices up up front with a VERY light pumpkin flavor. There wasn't as much pumpkin tastes as I was hoping for, but the spices were nice. Not really too much to this beer honestly. It wouldn't be my first choice for pumpkin Ales in the future.

The Three Beermigos Venture Out

The stars and moons have aligned or maybe an asteroid is headed towards earth. Either way a rarer by the year occasion is about to occur. The Three Beermigos are going to get together at their favorite watering hole (Taco Mac) and slug down a few new beers so that we can add them here for all of our loyal (there's probably one or two of you) readers. Saturday is the day, and there is a palpable excitement in the air. It's not often that the Three Beermigos gather in the same place these days......two yes.......Three Beermigos in the same place is like the Detroit Lions winning a game or the health care puzzle actually being solved. Anyway...check back here over the weekend and I'm sure we will have new beers posted, as well as stories for the crowd.

Here's to beer,

He'Brew Jewbelation Bar Mitzvah

Schmaltz Brewing Company
Strong Ale
13.0% (No that isn't a typo)

JT Score: 87/100

JT
says: So I picked this up (22oz.) after a long day at work as I stared at the wall of beers at my local hole in the wall liquor store (yeah there are metal bars on the windows). As tribute to one of my co-bloggers here I figured I would go with a He'Brew tonight. Now it is called Bar Mitzvah, the celebrated 13th birthday of a boy becoming a man, and let me tell you, if you drink this bad boy you are truly a man. 13 types of hops, 13 types of malts, and a whopping 13% ABV (failed to notice that at time of selection). I poured it into a standard pint glass which was a mistake, this beer is meant to be sipped, and slowly. With 13% ABV, I could dump this thing into the glass and only get at most a half inch of head which settled fast and had almost no lacing. To say it was dark in color is an understatement, you can eclipse the sun with this brew. The head is completely gone within 2 minutes. The malts are so powerful in the aroma it creates almost a fruitiness...which made me nervous as I had just experienced the Tommy Knocker Butthead which I did not like. Although there are 13 types of hops, they don't really show up until the end of the taste; the malts are what are most prevalent. Very, very malty with a slight dry hop ending that offsets the matliness quite nicely. The first few sips were a challenge because of the ABV; realize that many wines are the same amount. After allowing my palate to adjust, I began to enjoy the beer more, although it was difficult to pick individual nuances out of it because with so many malts and hops I felt like I was tasting something different each sip. Interestingly, the aftertaste was pleasant and faded reasonably quickly leaving a slight dryness to the palate. It is tough to say if I would drink this again, because after one pint, well..."he's feeling it!" overall though, another fine Jewbelation brew from Schmaltz.

Tommy Knocker Butt Head Bock

Tommy Knocker Butt Head Bock
8.2% ABV
Dopple Bock Lager
Jared Score- 72/100
JT Score - 70/100 (I really don't like sourness)

Jared Says-Poured from a 12oz bottle into a standard glass, cloudy amber color, little to no head. So why such a low score for a beer that has won so many medals? Honestly, I didn't like this beer at all....now that is not a good enough reason for the low score as there are beers that I don't like of which I can appreciate their beerness value. But here not, the beer started out with a good crisp hoppy flavor, but instead of a clean palate the beer left a SweetNSour aftertaste on the back of your tongue. I love flavor in my beer, but I do not want to continue tasting it 5 minutes later, unless it's Chinese food...and even then,.....not so much. As this is the 1st Tommy Knocker I have tried, I will try others in their line, but this one I will leave on the shelf.

JT says - I am going to concur with Jared here. I had heard so much press about this beer and was truly disappointed. The first nanosecond of flavor to this beer was good; nice crisp light hops, a shade of malt, good weight on the palate. But damn, that fruity sourness just overwhelmed me. I got about half way through the beer trying to see if my palate would adjust, but alas it was the actual true taste of the beer, so I chugged it to not waste the high gravity benefit. I have had other Tommy Knockers before and have liked them, so this one to me is somewhat of an anomaly to me.

The Three Beermigos Favorite Octoberfest Beers

In Honor Of Octoberfest
Here Are Each Of The Three Beermigos

Jared's Top 5 List (in no particular order)
1. Spaten Oktoberfest - Classic Octoberfest beer...1st beer I think about.
2. Paulaner Octoberfest - Great beer with great flavor.
3. Harpoon Octoberfest - Feel like this is an underrated beer in an underrated line-Harpoon makes great beer.
4. Sam Adams Octoberfest - Lots of flavor--and lots of hops in true SA style.
5. Dogwood Octoberfest - Local Microbrew in Ga (where the 3 Beermigos are) great line of beer.

Greg's Top 5 list
1. Spaten Oktoberfest - The first octoberfest beer I ever had. Still a classic.
2. Sierra Nevada Octoberfest - Pretty hoppy (which I live) with some caramel sweetness and some spice.
3. Terrapin Pumpkin Fest - Just had this beer and it makes the list. Great pumpkin beer.
4. Harpoon Octoberfest - I echo Jared's comments above; underrated brewery.
5. Paulaner Octoberfest - Solid beer with malts up front and a slight bitter finish.

JT's Top 5 List-
OK, so I am expanding the Oktoberfest concept to include the fall/autumn seasonal offerings, so forgive me for not highlighting pure Oktoberfest brews, but damnit I LOVE PUMPKINS.

1) Terrapin Pumpkinfest - As above, I love pumpkins (pie, donuts, bread, etc...) at 7.0% you can justify drinking this without being a pansy.
2) Avery The Kaiser - 9.3% kick you in the head great Marzen/Oktoberfest beer.
3) Sam Adams Octoberfest - A great Octoberfest usually available at your grocery store.
4) Dogfishhead Punkin Ale - Similar to the Terrapin, but with a stronger flavor of cinnamon and nutmeg.
5) Blue Moon Harvest Moon Pumpkin Ale - A rare reference to Coor's brewing something I like...

These are our favorite beers for this time of year. Please add your own favorites to the comments sections and let us know what you think about our choices. As well, share your Octoberfest beer/festival experiences. We have some great stories that we will post here.

Avery IPA

Avery IPA
6.30% ABV
American IPA
Greg Score: 75/100

Greg says: Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard glass. Small head, but had decent lacing. It poured a light golden color. Very translucent. Smell was pretty underwhelming. Mostly hops I would say. Taste was about the same. Hard to really pick out particular fruits in there. I was an easy drink though. Went down nice and smooth. I like a lot of Avery beers, and I LOVE IPA's, so the low score is more of an indication of my standards of IPA's and of Avery beers as opposed to it's actual quality. Bottom line, you won't be disappointed drinking one, but I would rather have some different IPA's.

Boulder Beer Mojo IPA

Boulder Beer Mojo IPA
7.2% ABV
American IPA
Greg Score: 82/100

Greg says: Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard glass. Poured a light gold color with a 1 finger head. Decent lacing as well. Smell definitely had citrus hops. Felt like I may have picked up some grapefruit in there.
Taste was similar to smell. Had some piney tastes in the beginning as well. Pretty hoppy finish with perhaps some more citrus of some type. Ample carbination and some bitterness lingers. Not a bad IPA. If pressed, I would say IPA's are my favorite type of beer. Having said that, I would drink this again. It's certainly not at the top of my IPA list, but it's definitely drinkable. I would love to sample this on tap.

Southampton Publick House Double White

Southampton Publick House Double White
6.70% ABV
Witbier
Greg Score: 90/100
Jared Score: 91/100
JT Score: 89/100
Three Beermigos average score: 90/100

Greg says: Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard glass. Light gold in color with nice lacing. Had a nice yeast smell with citrus and coriander. First taste has citrus, some lemon, and spices, as you would expect. Has a nice dry finish. This is a very refreshing beer and if you like this style, I highly recommend picking some up.

Jared Says: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a standard glass. Gotta admit....I love pouring a beer with a little bit of cloudiness, lets me know there is some flavor in there. I wasn't disappointed. Like Greg says...it's citrusy and spicey, but enjoyably smooth and very drinkable. This fits right into my flavor range as it's a double which gives me more malt than a typical white. If you like white ales..........give this one a try.

JT Says: Oh thank you Jared for giving me this last week. A 12 oz bottle that I actually used a 40 ml tulip glass for, not sure why but it worked well. Great aroma on this one and usually I am not a fan of citrus when the temperature goes down. Great, crisp, refreshing beer. Lovely citrus and spice in taste. No aftertaste at all for me which was nice since I was about to eat dinner. At 6.7% it is similar Hoegaarden but with a better kick, although you don't taste the extra alcohol.

Sweetwater Dank Tank Wet Dream

Sweetwater Dank Tank Wet Dream
7.50% ABV
Double IPA/Amber Ale
Greg Score: 78/100

Greg says: Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a standard glass. Pours an amber color with a bubbly head. Has a bit of a pine smell with some slight hops. Taste is similar to the smell; citrus/piney. The problem I have is that it almost seems water down. There are no bold flavors that stick out. I certainly would NOT classify this as a double IPA. It's not nearly strong enough in flavors. This is really more of a Red Amber Ale type beer. Pretty disappointed considering Sweetwater's track record. I have another bottle that is aging in the pantry. Gonna give that a shot some time down the road. But I don't think I would buy this again. And that is saying a lot because Sweetwater is one of my top 5 brewers.

Sweetwater Dank Tank Big Ol' Belgian Blue Balls

Sweetwater Dank Tank Big Ol' Belgian Blue Balls
8.00% ABV
Fruit Beer
Greg Score: 95/100
Jared Score: 96/100
JT Score: 93/100

Three Beermigos average score: 94.5/100

Greg says: Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a goblet. Pours a light amber color. Nice sweet, fruit smell off the bat. The beer starts off with a nice wheat flavor followed by some blueberry and some spices. The blueberry is more of a hint than anything. The perfect amount in my opinion. Has a very nice sweetish finish. As you can tell by the score, I LOVE this beer. As of this writing there are some bottles floating around Atlanta. If you can find it, buy it. You won't be sorry. Edit: I also had this on draft. On draft it is almost perfection.

Jared Says: Poured from a 22oz bottle into a standard glass, and have tried on draft. Wow!!! What a great beer. The guys at Sweetwater really know their stuff. This is another great concoction from the warped minds of the Dank Tank Crew. This is not a typicaly sweet fruit beer for a summer BBQ . This is a smooth hoppy beer with undertones of blueberry which you catch just as you taste the beer. Greg is right....If you can find it....try it. This beer (on tap) is pushing some others for my top 5 favorites...it's that good.

JT says: I actually had the opportunity to have this both on tap and out of the bottle. Taco Mac provided the draft version which we (Greg you were there...and had one too) were introduced to from a knowledgeable bartender. T-Mac served it in a 10 oz glass because of the 8.0% ABV, drank it home in a traditional Belgian Double/Triple glass poured from a 22oz (the only format for Dank Tank beers). It resembles a lighter colored Belgian double, lighter amber than typical. I picked up the blueberry aroma right of the top. Not as distinct as Sweetwater's Blue, but enough to liven up the beer a bit more. The first sip was, well...liquid velvet. I didn't get a big hop flavor out of it because the beer comes across so balanced. As a lover of traditional Belgians, the blueberry undertone was not so overwhelming that it altered the beer. I would recommend this one to anyone looking for a twist on traditional Belgians. This would be awesome as a finishing or desert beer.

Maredsous 10 Triple

Maredsous 10 Triple
10% ABV
Triple
Greg Score: 75/100

Greg says: Poured into a goblet from a 11.2 oz bottle. Poured a honey amber in color with a small thick white head. Fruit and spice aroma, but you really have to try hard to get the smells. The taste is really not what you think of for a Triple. I can really taste the yeast, honey and a strong booze flavor up front. The alcohol flavor really outlasts everything on the finish. Has pretty strong carbonation as well. It almost tastes like a pale ale more than a triple. Almost too much of an alcohol taste for me. I am actually pretty disappointed as I really like Triples, and I was looking forward to this one. With the wealth of good Triples out there, I can't say that I would buy this again.

Terrapin Gamma Ray

Terrapin Gamma Ray
10.8% ABV
Wheat Beer
Greg Score: 85/100

Greg says: I poured this from a 12 oz bottle into a standard glass. Beer is cloudy and yellow with a white head that falls away leaving lacing on the glass. Initial flavors are wheat, banana, and honey and it finishes with a nice sweetness. The high alcohol is hidden well. It's a bit too sweet to really have more than one in a sitting though. I see myself buying this again.

Bell's Cherry Stout

Bell's Cherry Stout
7.0% ABV
Stout
Greg Score: 70/100

Greg says: I poured this from a 12 oz bottle into a standard glass. Very little head. Very dark in color. I could taste the cherries, but they were not overwhelming. Nice beer on a cold day, but probably not a re-buy.

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA
9.0% ABV
Double IPA
JT Score: 90/100

JT says: I poured this one from a bottle into a standard 12oz pint glass. It initially had about 1-2 fingers of froth, settled quickly, and had nice lacing after settling. Murky orange, amber color resembling an unfiltered beer. For a 9% beer, the alcohol is hidden well. Dry hopped flavor that has medium bitterness. Really nice dry hop finish that isn't overwhelming with a smooth woody flavor. Slight hints of citrus in the aroma. This is definitely a beer I could drink regularly.
